Gift packaging is bought for how it opens, not for how it protects, and the structures reflect that. Two-piece boxes with a lift-off lid are the classic format: they feel substantial, hold an insert flat, and give a reveal rather than an unwrapping. Magnetic-closure boxes snap shut in a book style and are the most photographed format we make. Tray-and-sleeve builds slide open slowly, which suits a deliberate presentation at a lower cost than rigid. Rigid gift boxes carry real weight in the hand, which is most of the perceived value in a premium gift. Kit and set boxes hold several products in one partitioned tray. Printed paper bags and show boxes carry the gift out of the store and are often the first thing the recipient sees.
Gift packaging is where rigid board earns its cost. Greyboard from 1.5mm to 3mm, wrapped in a separately printed paper, does not flex when lifted - and a box that gives slightly under finger pressure reads as cheap regardless of how well it is printed. The trade-offs are real: rigid costs more per unit, arrives assembled rather than flat, and takes more storage and freight volume.
Where a folding carton is the better economic fit, heavier stock does much of the same work. On finishes, the combination this category has settled on is soft-touch lamination on the body with foil or embossing on the logo - the matte ground makes the metal read as precious rather than shiny. Ribbon pulls and magnetic closures are both available. Stock and finish options are set out in full on our materials and printing page.
The insert is the gift experience. A box holding four items in a grid reads as a considered set; the same four loose in a carton read as stock. A punch partition in paperboard gives a clean grid economically. A moulded or cut tray holds irregular shapes precisely and is what a premium set needs. A fence partition divides a box into rows for bars, bottles or bagged items.
Where a set holds products of different heights, the insert has to seat each one at its own depth. A flat partition leaves the shorter item rattling below the lid, which is the single most common complaint on set packaging. Send us the actual products where possible - a technical drawing rarely captures a taper.
Three questions settle it. How heavy is the contents - anything with weight will bow a folding carton base over time on a shelf. How many units are you ordering, since rigid's higher unit cost matters more at volume and its storage footprint matters more if you hold stock. And is the box itself part of the product, kept and reused, or discarded on opening?
A useful middle path for brands running both retail and gifting is one plain structure with a printed sleeve or belly band. The box is produced once, and each occasion or client's branding lives on the sleeve, which is cheap to print in small runs.
A large share of gift packaging is bought by someone who will never use the contents - corporate gifts, wedding favours, hotel amenities, event giveaways. That work has different constraints from retail: small quantities, someone else's branding, and a date that does not move.
Assembly time is usually the hidden constraint. A box that arrives flat and needs folding is a problem at 300 units the week before an event, so an auto-bottom or a pre-assembled two-piece is worth the difference. On seasonal ranges, one dieline can carry any number of artworks - the structure is originated once and each season is a print run, so a Christmas edition and a core box share the same tooling and the same lead time.
The floor is 100 units per style with no tooling charges, which is what makes a 150-unit corporate run or a small seasonal edition viable. Volume pricing begins at 500 units per design. Lead time is 10-15 business days from proof approval, or 8-10 on a rush - worth confirming early if the order is tied to a seasonal or event date. Delivery anywhere in the USA is free. Every order includes a free dieline and 3D proof, and rigid boxes ship assembled rather than flat - worth allowing for in your storage planning.
