Food Packaging Styles We Produce

Food packaging is specified by the dish, not by the category, so the range here spans structures that have very little in common. Takeaway containers need locked corners and a barrier for wet dishes, or venting for anything fried. Pizza boxes are corrugated and built to hold a hot pie flat while stacked in a delivery bag. Cake boxes are sized from the cake board rather than the sponge, with a continuous flat base so nothing catches when the box is carried. Bakery and confectionery cartons hold light product but sell on appearance, which is where windows and inserts earn their place. Paper bags carry the order out of the shop and need a reinforced base if containers are going to sit level inside them.

Food-Grade Stock and Barriers

Whether a box needs food-grade board depends on whether it touches food directly. A wrapped bar inside a sleeve does not; a cake sitting straight on the base does. Tell us which at the quote stage - it is a stock specification, not a finish, and it cannot be added later.

The interior treatment is the consequential choice. Uncoated food-grade board is the most recyclable and compostable, handles dry and lightly greasy food, and fails on anything wet. A grease-resistant treatment holds back oil without a plastic layer, keeping most of the sustainability position. A poly lining is the most reliable barrier for genuinely wet dishes and the hardest to recycle. Specify from the wettest item on your menu rather than the average one. Full coating and stock comparisons are on our materials and printing page.

Sizing, Portions and Stacking

Food boxes are almost never handled singly. Three or four containers travel in one insulated bag with the bottom one carrying the rest, so flat square lids stack and domed or bowed lids do not. The most useful thing you can do at design stage is standardise footprints: a menu where every dish uses one of two base sizes in different depths stacks reliably and is far easier to store in a kitchen.

For cakes, size from the board diameter and measure to the highest point of the finished cake - a buttercream dome or a topper can add 50-80mm above the nominal height, and a lid resting on a decoration ruins it. For pizza, we build to your pie diameter with the clearance needed to close over a topped pizza rather than a flat base.

Choosing Between Structures

An auto-lock or tuck-top with a locking flap holds shut without tape and suits most dishes. A four-corner tray with a separate lid spreads weight across a continuous base and will not split under a heavy meal, which makes it the better choice above roughly 500g and the standard for cakes. A clamshell is fastest to fill and close, which matters more than it sounds at peak service. Corrugated becomes necessary once the box has to insulate, span more than about 300mm, or survive a delivery network on its own.

Whatever the structure, it should close in one motion. A box that needs two hands and a fold sequence gets closed badly on a busy Friday night.

Restaurants, Bakeries and Packaged Brands

Three kinds of business order food packaging from us, and they want different things. Delivery restaurants care about stacking, closure speed and the fact that the box is the only branded surface in a transaction the platform otherwise owns. Bakeries and counter businesses care about windows and how the box looks on a shelf, since most of their sales are decided visually. Packaged food brands selling through retailers care about ingredient and allergen panels, barcode placement, and shelf module dimensions.

Allergen copy is worth planning early in all three cases. The US major allergen list has expanded in recent years, sesame included, and an ingredient block has nowhere to go on a box designed with a full-bleed photograph on every face.

Ordering, Lead Times and Delivery

Orders start at 100 units per style. Because nothing is charged for tooling, running three container sizes costs unit price alone rather than three separate charges. Volume pricing starts at 500 units, which is where most food service orders sit. Production is 10-15 business days after proof approval, 8-10 on a rush, with free shipping across the USA and a free dieline and 3D proof on every order.
